PUBLIC SESSION IN MADRID
Welcome back readers. This week we are happy to share an update from one of our workshops delivered recently in Spain as part of our informal Open Systemic Challenge Framing World Tour. Taught in Spanish and English, this session was organized in collaboration with our friends at the courageous La Nave Nodriza Academy
We are always happy to conduct sessions in Europe, particularly delightful for me since I live in Madrid part-time.
In the big picture global sense, we have been seeing rising interest from organizations seeking to advance their strategic challenge framing capacity and the arriving tsunami of Ai functionality has certainly accelerated that rise.
The 2026 world tour sessions allow us to experiment with new Think-Blending knowledge combinations from different disciplines. More typically we teach the entire Complexity Navigation approach in organizational settings.
Swimming in SenseMaking for ChangeMaking waters for several decades, we have a passion for engaging with and helping a new generation of changemaking leaders as well as folks who’ve been round the block a few times.
In the public Madrid workshop we focused on sharing a Super Robust Defuzzing combination of powerful — and still underused — capabilities in changemaking leadership: Strategic SenseMaking and Systemic Challenge Framing.
DEFUZZING TOOLSET FOCUS
In terms of what we teach; it is all practice-based. While each workshop tends to be different depending on who the participants are the overall defuzzing notes we focus on are as follows:
→ Open Orientation Conversation: Together we are landing in a fuzzy situation anticipated to be complex. What is our underlying orientation in Complexity Navigation and what is the situation we need to defuzz?
→ Open Strategic SenseMaking / Universe Diagrams: One important element in visual sensemaking is the visual hands-on method for mapping systems, relationships, and dynamics known as Universe Diagrams. The universe typically has boundaries and you get to choose and draw them. This exercise requires new visualization skills. The result is the ability to create ecology pictures in real time that can be shared. Those pictures inform and accelerate Systemic Challenge Framing.
→ Open Systemic Challenge Mapping: A structured approach to reframing strategic challenges to reveal creative new paths forward instead of reinforcing old dead ends. (Not root cause analysis). This exercise requires new challenge mapping skills. The result is the ability to cocreate with others systemic pictures of interconnected challenges that can be shared. Those pictures inform and accelerate forward motion into ChangeMaking.
The underlying premise is simple but consequential: Before your team tackles a challenge/situation, you need to understand the bigger picture system it lives in. Before you act on a challenge, or series of challenges it's useful to see the surrounding constellation of challenges before deciding upon one or multiple courses of forward motion.

COMPLEXITY NAVIGATION PROGRAM
We launched the broader Complexity Navigation Program in 2007 and since then have done lots of work with global companies facing the VUCA driven need to maximixe diverse brainpower and build proactive adaptive capacity. Unlike public sessions, often that work, which includes building Open Systemic Challenge Framing capacity is customized and strategically confidential.
