VisBit 9: Mobile Phones – Who is #1?

If you had to take a guess at what country has the most cell phone subscriptions per person, what would that guess be? USA? No. Finland? No. China? No.

Most cell phones per person…Answer: United Arab Emirates.

USA is 83rd
Finland is 23rd
China is 142nd.

In all of the top 61 ranking countries, there are more mobile phone subscriptions than there are people! The United Arab Emirates comes in at #1, with 209 mobile phones for every 100 people. Next is Estonia with 188, Bahrain with 186, Macau with 177, and Hong Kong with 166.

The United States, with a measly 87 mobile phones per 100 people, comes in 83rd place out of 209 countries.

In Bloomberg Businessweek, Susan Teltscher, an analyst with International Telecommunication Union, explains that the countries with the most phones per person tend to be small, with lots of borders or numerous foreign workers. Visitors tend to buy mobile phones locally to use during their stay.
