Enabling Design Thinking

Humantific CoFounder GK VanPatter writes about one particular “fuzzy misperception wave” often appearing in Linkedin discussion groups.

“With some design thinking related discussion groups on LinkedIn now exceeding 80,000+ members, many new to the subject terrain, it is not so unusual for enthusiastic fuzzy misperception waves to build from one conversation to the next at a rapid rate. Like a fire-hose of run-away freight trains misperception waves seem to appear via social media at volumes that are no longer possible to intercept or comment on.

With everyone busy most practice leaders just let the waves flow hoping they will sort themselves out eventually. Some do. Some don’t. Some fuzzy waves are at times humorous and at other times painful to watch as they take hold and or grow.

Opposite to Donald Trump’s twitter postings, most practice leaders try to select their discussion participations and contributions carefully in consideration of limited time constraints..:-)

In this vein and considering the increasing impact of discussion groups we try to pick and choose which fuzzy misperception waves are important enough to comment on, to make more sense of and or to offer an alternate perspective on for our Humantific readers.

One such misperception wave, popular at the moment is depicting Design Thinking as a “mindset” thing.

Often seen in discussion threads is this murky phrase: “Design Thinking is a mindset not a process.”…On and on it goes being reposted many times by its advocates.”

“We were delighted last week to see Harvard Business School doing a heads-up in the direction of the already existing design thinking leadership movement! Ten + years after it began that is real and long awaited progress! Wooooo Hooooo!

Rather slow to recognize the business communities significant interest in next generation design thinking capacity building Harvard Business School announced that it has awakened to the opportunity and will be in 2016 formally jumping into the design thinking education business.

“Harvard Business School is emphasising design thinking as one of its big focus areas for leadership teaching in the days ahead.”

Yes that’s right, there is Another OTHER Design Thinking out there, just announced!

Last week the academically focused PhD Design discussion list, well known in the transformation practice community for being slow to adapt, least effective, and often unfortunately down-right nasty when it comes to the subject of design futures made what was for that group, a big leap forward. A few of its loudest, self-appointed leaders announced in a 3 page manifesto posted inside their debating group and across social media that they were finally ready to recognize a multiple part change wave occurring beyond the confines of their circle.Continue Reading..

Humantific CoFounder, Elizabeth Pastor is this week teaching cross-disciplinary Strategic CoCreation skills in the Executive MBA Program at ICADE, one of Spain’s leading Business and Economics Universities. We continue to see interest in practical innovation skill-building rising around the world. Near and dear to much of what we do at Humantific is the theme of New Terrain, New Leaders, New Skills. It is a theme that we believe in as we work with several forward thinking graduate schools.

Strategic CoCreation skill-building is part of Humantific’s Complexity Navigation Program. These are 21st century leadership skills taught in experiential workshops.

The OTHER Design Thinking

Call For Participants:

Humantific CoFounder Elizabeth Pastor presented The OTHER Design Thinking for the first time last week at the Design Thinkers 2013 conference in Toronto.

In the presentation Humantific points out what realms of knowledge are now being blended in practice today as well as 10 differences between Mainstream Design Thinking and The OTHER Design Thinking.

It is becoming clear to many that the era of assuming that all wicked social problems can be solved by creating more products and services is over.

Part of the presentation is an invitational call for submissions in reference to inclusion in our next virtual book entitled The OTHER Design Thinking now in progress. We are looking for 3-4 other leading innovation practices already engaged in The OTHER Design Thinking and interested in appearing in this book along with Humantific.

If you are operating a practice where you begin all projects with the built-in assumption that products, services and or experiences will be outcomes [Design 1 & Design 2] so sorry but this is not a project for you. That circle of mainstream practices has already been widely covered, over and over again in the mainstream business media, in mainstream design media, mainstream design thinking movies, in mainstream books, etc.

This project seeks to give voice to a different circle of other emerging practices that make no such up-front assumptions. [See “10 Ways its Different” on pages 77 to 99].

If you are engaged in design thinking oriented innovation practice and have already been operating beyond the “Crossover Era” for at least 5 years feel free to contact us if you would like to be considered.

Humantific CoFounder Elizabeth Pastor will be giving a talk on The OTHER Design Thinking at the Design Thinkers 2013 conference upcoming in Toronto, Canada, November 6-7.

While much of the design thinking community continues to focus on Design 1 and 2 there is an emerging community of leading practices already engaged in the terrain of Design 3 and 4.

Elizabeth will give a talk on what it feels like and what it means to be already active in The OTHER Design Thinking community today.

With the marketplace vibe around the term “How Might We?” continuing, we thought this might be a good moment to revisit the subject and post a further clarification for our readers, many of whom are leading innovation-culture-building initiatives inside large organizations.

Our clients will already know that, for many years, numerous innovation firms, including Humantific, have been using How Might We? and other invitation stem phrases as part of how upstream challenge-framing is constructed. Use of the celebrated phrase is, by now, widespread around the world. With thousands of good people already integrating the phrase into their everyday work lives, the global How Might We? collaborative language adoption continues to grow every week, month, and year. Humantific CoFounder GK VanPatter will give a talk on the creation of the new book: Innovation Methods Mapping / DeMystifying 80+ Years of Innovation Process Design at the upcoming Systemic Design Conference in Oslo, Norway, October 8th-11th.

In the global marketplace today there continues to be rising interest in forms of design thinking operating at the scale of complex organizational and societal changemaking.

In tandem with that interest wave there is no shortage of terms being used in the marketplace right now for design thinking at scale, including Meta Design, Systemic Design, Systems Oriented Design, Strategic Design, Meta CoCreation, Design 3 & Design 4, NextDesign Leadership, Design At Scale, Whole Systems Design, Adaptable Inquiry, Strategic CoCreation, Complexity Navigation, the OTHER Design Thinking, etc. Whatever you choose to call it evidently recognition of the need for new forms of upstream design thinking at the scale of organizations and societies has arrived.

There is now a growing community of practioner leaders and academic leaders interested in this subject that Humantific has been involved in since its founding.

Being hosted by the Oslo School of Architecture & Design the Systemic Design conference is specifically focused on “Relating systems thinking & design.”
