Thanks Kate Storey!

“What a Strategic Innovation Consultancy looks like!”

Just catching up to this one. It was inspiring to see graduate student Kate Story’s post on Medium inspired by Humantific. When we are busy doing our work everyday we do not always think about how or if our work might inspire a new generation of design leaders so it is always great to hear from those who see the value in what we are doing. Making great use of our materials we loved your post Kate!

Kate Storey: “Humantific’s academic prowess affords them the ability to extend and adapt contemporary Design Thinking theories. Their rigour has allowed them to craft their own space and convey it with mastery — see how they articulate the 10 key differences (pp77–97) between themselves and the ‘Mainstream Design’. [7].”

“Humantific understands that designing the conditions for humans to change is a key factor for success. A clue maybe in their name, that they know that the humans are the ones it all comes down to — and that often human design is the focus for adjustment to overcome our human selves, and make work towards a better future possible.”

Kate Gets it!

Kate, we see you are in Melbourne but we hope you stay in touch with us and visit us if you come to New York.

Making Sense of Service Design

Service Design Thinking: Confusion or Clarity?

Humantific CoFounder GK VanPatter has published another post in his popular ongoing “Making Sense Series.”

“Clarity or lack there-of is something that is often difficult to talk about in the design / design thinking community. Not everyone in the community of design communities is up for clarity. Lack of clarity often leads to a confused public. At the moment, mountains of confusion around the subject of design and design thinking exist publicly.”

“Contributing to the confusion we recently noted the UK Government’s launch of its “Design Principles”.

It is really none of our business but from a methods perspective, there seems to be some confused logic there.

Some enlightened person in the UK might ask:

Are these meant to be Digital Service Design Principles, Service Design Principles or Design Principles?

How did you get from “Design Principles” to “Don’t make assumptions” and “make things open” to “Service design starts with identifying user needs.”

Who said anything about presuming, predetermining that the challenges are service related?

This is an assumption often seen in service design logic.”

Humantific on Radio Finland

Humantific CoFounder, Garry K. VanPatter was interviewed at the Creative Economy & Beyond Conference in Helsinki by Barbro Björkfelt, journalist, documentary film maker for YLE Finnish Broadcasting Company. At the conference VanPatter introduced the NextD SenseMaking Framework of Design 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0 which became the talk of the two day session and helped propel the focus towards strategic design and away from old notions of design as product creation.
