Another OTHER Design Thinking

AnotherOther_PG26

Here at Humantific we are always delighted to see design education community change initiatives inspired by The OTHER Design Thinking 2013-2014, Occupy Reimagining Design 2011 and the body of work within NextDesign Futures 2002-2014. Are you ready to be surprised?

Yes that’s right, there is Another OTHER Design Thinking out there, just announced!

Last week the academically focused PhD Design discussion list, well known in the transformation practice community for being slow to adapt, least effective, and often unfortunately down-right nasty when it comes to the subject of design futures made what was for that group, a big leap forward. A few of its loudest, self-appointed leaders announced in a 3 page manifesto posted inside their debating group and across social media that they were finally ready to recognize a multiple part change wave occurring beyond the confines of their circle.Continue Reading..

Making Sense of Next Design Frontiers

This month and next we are republishing some materials from the Humantific Archives related to early views into the subject of rethinking design thinking, the value of strategic design, rethinking design education, etc.

This interview with GK VanPatter CoFounder of Humantific and NextDesign Leadership Network was first published in 2005.Continue Reading..

Meanings of Designed Spaces

We are delighted to see that Meanings of Designed Spaces edited by our friend and colleague Tiiu Poldma PhD has just been published by Fairchild Books.

“Meanings of Designed Spaces is a collection of articles by — and interviews with — 40 renowned design academics and professionals exploring how people make meaning using design today, and how “designed space” both shapes and is shaped by technology, business, ethics, culture, sustainability and society. As society rapidly changes, so too does our relationship with design and the spaces of the designed world….The book’s subject matter moves from the theoretical to the practical and includes, at times, contradictory viewpoints, providing a springboard for conversation and debate.”

Included in the new book is an interview that Peter Jones PhD conducted with GK VanPatter CoFounder of Humantific and NextDesign Leadership Institute entitled: NextDesign Geographies; Understanding Design 1,2,3,4: the Rise of Visual SenseMaking. In that interview GK VanPatter explains how and why the NextD Complexity Ladder was created as well as other change waves underway with significant implications for graduate design education as well as practice such as skill-to-scale.

“Today, the synchronization of tools and skills to problem scale is a quest underway in most disciplines around the world. No graduate school, and few practices, can escape that reckoning.”

You can read more details about the book here at Fairchild Books.

Teaching Co-Creation Now

Continuing its ReReThinking Design series, NextDesign Leadership Institute has published a new virtual book: “Teaching Co-Creation Now” which makes transparent several long-brewing but seldom-talked-about graduate design education challenges. Like most NextD material, this story reflects considerable synthesis after years of listening to NextD Academy workshop participants and many visiting graduate students from around the world.

To quote the story’s author, GK VanPatter: “Not everyone is going to like the notion of defuzzing this particular subject, but when it comes to deeply understanding what the rise of cocreation really means for graduate design education, it’s getting very late. It’s possible that we have not been clear enough in some of our own earlier materials. Cross-disciplinary cocreation remains at the core of next design, whether everyone likes it or not.”

Recognizing that it’s important to walk the walk, and not just talk the talk, NextD Academy has been offering next design leadership workshops every summer since 2003. Numerous forward thinking design education leaders have attended.

NextDesign Leadership Institute

About NextD / DeFuzz the Future: Update July 2015:

NextD has been DeFuzzing the Future of Design Leadership at Scale, Design Thinking at Scale, ReScaling Design Methods, ReThinking Design Thinking since 2002. The NextD initiative was originally created by GK VanPatter and Elizabeth Pastor as a community sensemaking experiment. NextD has been sharing that sensemaking in numerous forms, accross numerous platforms for more than ten years. As a contribution to the community we are happy to make many of those documents available for free to those interested in the subject of ReRethinking Design Thinking.  (See links below.)

Since launch the NextD team has given many, many talks and held numerous public workshops around the world (see examples below). NextD continues to create and share frameworks that make sense of the emerging future of design in the 21st century. We also continue to assist organizational leaders, educational leaders interested in created programs and cultures built around adaptable NextDesign Leadership Skills.Continue Reading..

Inspired by Skill-to-Scale

We were delighted to see Noah Raford being inspired by Peter Jones being inspired by NextDesign Geographies…:-)

Created by GK VanPatter and Elizabeth Pastor, NextD Geographies has been presented at numerous conferences around the world. It is a community-focused sensemaking framework that helps others make sense of the design thinking landscape.

One of its central ideas, not always popular in the design community, is Skill-to-Scale. The implications are that different design skills are needed for different levels of complexity. For example, what goes on in Design 1 is radically different from the tools and methods of Design 3. As design-oriented professionals become more involved in changemaking in the context of organizations and societies, rather than just product or service creation (Design 2), these differences become more clear. Not everyone is happy about that kind of clarity.

GK VanPatter: “As a field of knowledge, design is an amorphous time warp that exists across several time zones or paradigms simultaneously…The NextD Geographies Framework of D1, D2, D3, D4 is, in essence, a complexity scale. It is a post-discipline view that is process, not content, focused.”

For more, see The Rise of Visual SenseMaking: GK VanPatter interviewed by Peter Jones PhD.

NextD ideas and their ramifications continue to inspire and influence many design thinking initiatives.

Workshops TWO & THREE Wrap

[slideshow=20]

We had a great group here in New York last week for Workshops TWO & THREE at NextDesign Leadership Institute. It can be a rather mind-bending skill-building journey and everyone worked extremely hard for three full days to emerge with their new advanced co-creation leadership abilities. In Workshops TWO & THREE, participants learn advanced innovation co-creation, navigation and facilitation skills applicable to the Design 3.0 & 4.0 activity spaces. These sessions are taught by leaders of Humantific StrategyLab.
