Inclusive Innovation Culture Building

Surfacing Bias in the Context of Innovation

Humantific CoFounder, GK VanPatter tackles the difficult multi-dimensional subjects of Cognitive Bias, Cognitive Awareness, Cognitive Diversity, Cognitive Privileging, Cognitive Minorities and Cognitive Inclusion in his latest Linkedin Blog post....all part of the Future of Work!

“Hello again Humantific readers. In this week’s post we are returning to a theme long at the center of our practice and that is Cognitive Inclusion, also known as Cognitive Diversity, also known as Inclusive Innovation Culture Building.

Not sure exactly why but, out in the marketplace today, you can read 10 articles on the evolving subject of “Diversity in Organizations”and the notion of cognitive diversity never comes up.

You can read 10 articles on the subject of “Cognitive Bias”, some even focused on innovation, and the notion of thinking styles as a form of bias never comes up.

You can read 10 articles on “Pillars for Nurturing Innovation”and the leadership responsibility of acknowledging and tackling cognitive privileging is never mentioned.

Perhaps it’s a little like fish not being aware of the water they are swimming in. Whatever it is, we have noted several enduring blind spots in the popular media literature of these diversity and inclusion related subjects.

Noting that media train we decided it might be confusing to our clients to be seeing articles and posts that point out 15 or 16 dimensions of “Cognitive Bias” related to innovation that never mention what we teach, front and center, in Humantific Academy workshops….so here we are! Good time to check in!”

Upstream Challenge Framing

Skill-Building Workshops Coming Soon!

Are your teams burning valuable resources working on the wrong set of challenges? Are you making giant assumptions regarding what the challenges are? Are hidden assumptions embedded in the methods you are using?

Today, organizational leaders in all industries are faced with making sense of and prioritizing a vast landscape of challenges facing their organizations. In a continuously changing world, those challenges can range from mega to mini, from long standing to real-time emergent.

The ability to rapidly defuzz and order challenges visually in a way that is sharable has already become a key innovation leadership skill of the 21st century. At Humantific we call this strategic sensemaking skill, Upstream Challenge Framing.

What makes it different from product, software, service and experience related framing is that this is upstream from any preconceived notions of what the challenges and solution paths might be. In Upstream Challenge Framing, we open the aperture to the possibility that you might not fully understand what the challenges facing you actually are.

At the very least, you probably do not fully understand the challenge context. With openness of mind, we set out to defuzz, order and construct a visual map of the challenges that shows, often for the first time, the connections between challenges, from broad to narrow.

Before you go boil the ocean, or assume you just need yet another software tweak sprint let’s understand the challenge context. Turning the lights on in challenge landscapes is the purpose of Upstream Challenge Framing. Mastering this framing skill is not always a walk in the park, but its value-add is well worth the effort.

This is a real-time strategic framing skill that makes most sense to organizational leaders engaged upstream from run-of-the-mill (“Agile-like”) project briefs. This skill will be most valuable to leaders who have already figured out that “Agile” is assumption-based, weak on strategic framing and not a silver bullet. This session will provide an introduction to Upstream Challenge Framing. Our advanced Humantific Academy workshops provide advanced skill building.

This is a preliminary announcement for upcoming introductory skill-building workshops in New York, Los Angles, Madrid, Barcelona, Berlin, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, London, Singapore.

If you have interest in attending one of these upcoming sessions in one of these cities feel free to let us know. Attendance will be limited.

Humantific Skill-Building

We receive many requests for training in Humantific skills. In this regard, some years ago we created Humantific Academy inside which is the Complexity Navigation Program containing three interconnecting streams of innovation leadership skill; Strategic CoCreation, Design Research and Visual SenseMaking. These are skills geared for organizational leaders facing continuous change and rising complexity in their marketplaces. Unlike “Agile” these are skills geared for business contexts where the challenges are fuzzy, complex requiring significant unpacking and inclusive multi-disciplinary stakeholder involvement. These are skills geared towards the creation of inclusive innovation cultures. For more info send us an email.

Humantific CoFounder GK VanPatter has published another post in his popular ongoing “Making Sense Series.

“We were delighted last week to see Harvard Business School doing a heads-up in the direction of the already existing design thinking leadership movement! Ten + years after it began that is real and long awaited progress! Wooooo Hooooo!

Rather slow to recognize the business communities significant interest in next generation design thinking capacity building Harvard Business School announced that it has awakened to the opportunity and will be in 2016 formally jumping into the design thinking education business.

“Harvard Business School is emphasising design thinking as one of its big focus areas for leadership teaching in the days ahead.”

Being strategic design practitioners involved in the innovation leadership skill-building and innovation methodology communities for many years we were particularly interested to see what Harvard has in mind…:-)”Continue Reading..

Envisioning Futures Program

DSC03148DSC03088

Working in collaboration with a leading global financial services corporation based in San Francisco, Humantific has created a repeatable Future Envisioning CoCreation Workshop that is being rolled out to hundreds of employees in the next 12 months. As global markets remain turbulent adaptive organizations are investing in proactive envisioining that maximizes collective brainpower.

Making extensive use of visualized customer research and future horizon trends, Humantific designed the learning experience, the data/information fields, the envisioning exercises as well as the skill-building program within.

Physical experience future envisioning gives employees the opportunity to step away from their daily activities, deliberately focus on the future and make constructive use of their own marketplace observations while engaging with colleagues from many disciplines. Its also an opportunity to do common-language cocreation skill-building across the organization so it adds multiple levels of value simmaltaneoulsy.

We can’t tell you what exactly happens in confidential client sessions but we can say that each is focused on generating scores of constructive outcomes that are directly useful to the company in various ways.

Connecting the dots between new generation leadership, proactive envisioning and everyday innovation, many organizational leaders are looking for ways to make innovation real, inclusive and actionable by design rather than by accident.

Occupy Reimagining Design Education

Humantific CoFounder, GK VanPatter was recently interviewed by Wycliffe Radum of Aalto University Design Factory in Finland.

Wycliffe Radum: In the first Future of Innovation [CEB] conference in Helsinki, in September 2009, you challenged Aalto University’s designers to reach into the realm of organizational innovation by designing strategies and systems rather than products and services. Two years have passed since the conference and you have visited Aalto University a few times during this period. Do you perceive that Aalto University has risen up to the challenge? Has there been a noticeable shift towards the desired organizational changes?

Garry K. VanPatter: “Hello Wycliffe: Happy to do this with you…Yes, I do well remember speaking at that Future of Innovation Conference in Helsinki. I met many terrific people there doing interesting work including some Alto leadership folks who were working on the university combine initiative at that time. It seemed then like an ambitious undertaking. I do recall that several Aalto leaders were interested in the NextDesign Geographies Framework of Design 1,2,3,4 in addition to what Humantific does……”Continue Reading..

Humantific at Telefonica Madrid

Last week, Humantific’s Elizabeth Pastor was rocking away in Madrid teaching two back-to-back workshops at Telefonica. As part of an introduction to Humantific’s Complexity Navigation Program, Elizabeth taught A Glimpse into Visual SenseMaking and A Glimpse into Upstream Challenge Framing. Both sessions are designed to introduce cross-disciplinary skills useful to organizational leaders who are faced with challenges beyond product and service creation presumptions.

During the Visual SenseMaking workshop, participants learned the benefit of using visual models to bring clarity to complicated business ideas. Each person created their own visual toolkit and learned basic visual sensemaking skills.

The afternoon session was focused on Upstream Challenge Framing, a skill in high demand today as organizational leaders are increasingly tasked with tackling highly complex challenges in their institutions and communities.

Humantific’s Complexity Navigation Program focuses on a synthesized set of concrete skills that leaders can put into practice in their organizations and in societies.

Stay tuned for news about more Glimpse sessions in New York and San Francisco!

Teaching Co-Creation Now

Continuing its ReReThinking Design series, NextDesign Leadership Institute has published a new virtual book: “Teaching Co-Creation Now” which makes transparent several long-brewing but seldom-talked-about graduate design education challenges. Like most NextD material, this story reflects considerable synthesis after years of listening to NextD Academy workshop participants and many visiting graduate students from around the world.

To quote the story’s author, GK VanPatter: “Not everyone is going to like the notion of defuzzing this particular subject, but when it comes to deeply understanding what the rise of cocreation really means for graduate design education, it’s getting very late. It’s possible that we have not been clear enough in some of our own earlier materials. Cross-disciplinary cocreation remains at the core of next design, whether everyone likes it or not.”

Recognizing that it’s important to walk the walk, and not just talk the talk, NextD Academy has been offering next design leadership workshops every summer since 2003. Numerous forward thinking design education leaders have attended.
