All organizational leaders, perhaps especially those in the financial services industry, are facing enormous continous change today. For more than a year, Humantific has been working with the The Inter-American Development Bank’s FutureBankingLab designing and delivering a traveling proactive Beyond Banking Program.
The FutureBankingLab is essentially a multi-disciplinary, global think tank formed by institutions and experts in different areas of banking. It travels around the globe involving many stakeholders in structured dialogue.
Its purpose is to explore challenges and opportunties accross the global banking system at this time of great change. One of its functions is to promote sustainable governance principles that will empower the industry to thrive in a challenging future.
Having kicked off the program last year in Cologne, Germany, Humantific was recently invited back to lead the facilitation of another round of sessions in Madrid, this time focused on developing strategies to fund “The Missing Middle” in Latin America and the Caribbean’s financial sector, in collaboration with IDB, BBVA (Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria) and the MIF (Multilateral Investment Fund).
The Humantific Academy team returns to London this week to do back-to-back skill building workshops for the BBC Customer Experience Group.
Many Humantific clients are interested in how we do what we do and seek knowledge transfer. Inside Humantific’s Complexity Navigation Program we teach advanced skill-building in Strategic CoCreation, Design Research and Visual SenseMaking. Combined these are next generation innovation leadership skills.
Last summer we introduced the program to the BBC and they asked us to come back to London to do another round of skill-building in a series of back-to-back Strategic CoCreation workshops throughout this week.
Many experience design groups are seeking to add additional upstream value in their organizations by upskilling in the direction of Strategic CoCreation. They want to be able to go out into their organization to help other groups with all kinds of innovation and change related challenges not just experience design related challenges.
Wycliffe Radum: In the first Future of Innovation [CEB] conference in Helsinki, in September 2009, you challenged Aalto University’s designers to reach into the realm of organizational innovation by designing strategies and systems rather than products and services. Two years have passed since the conference and you have visited Aalto University a few times during this period. Do you perceive that Aalto University has risen up to the challenge? Has there been a noticeable shift towards the desired organizational changes?

I met many terrific people there doing interesting work including some Alto leadership folks who were working on the university combine initiative at that time. It seemed then like an ambitious undertaking. Last week, Humantific’s Elizabeth Pastor was rocking away in Madrid teaching two back-to-back workshops at Telefonica. As part of an introduction to Humantific’s Complexity Navigation Program, Elizabeth taught A Glimpse into Visual SenseMaking and A Glimpse into Upstream Challenge Framing. Both sessions are designed to introduce cross-disciplinary skills useful to organizational leaders who are faced with challenges beyond product and service creation presumptions.
During the Visual SenseMaking workshop, participants learned the benefit of using visual models to bring clarity to complicated business ideas. Each person created their own visual toolkit and learned basic visual sensemaking skills.
The afternoon session was focused on Upstream Challenge Framing, a skill in high demand today as organizational leaders are increasingly tasked with tackling highly complex challenges in their institutions and communities.
Humantific’s Complexity Navigation Program focuses on a synthesized set of concrete skills that leaders can put into practice in their organizations and in societies.

Continuing its ReReThinking Design series, NextDesign Leadership Institute has published a new virtual book: “Teaching Co-Creation Now” which makes transparent several long-brewing but seldom-talked-about graduate design education challenges. Like most NextD material, this story reflects considerable synthesis after years of listening to NextD Academy workshop participants and many visiting graduate students from around the world.
To quote the story’s author, GK VanPatter: “Not everyone is going to like the notion of defuzzing this particular subject, but when it comes to deeply understanding what the rise of cocreation really means for graduate design education, it’s getting very late. It’s possible that we have not been clear enough in some of our own earlier materials. Cross-disciplinary cocreation remains at the core of next design, whether everyone likes it or not.”
Recognizing that it’s important to walk the walk, and not just talk the talk, NextD Academy has been offering next design leadership workshops every summer since 2003. Numerous forward thinking design education leaders have attended.
