Portrait of Los Angeles Coming Soon

Breathing Life into Numbers!

Continuing our ten year collaboration with Measure of America, Humantific Understandinglab is at work designing the upcoming Portrait of Los Angeles.

For those readers who might not know: Since 2007 the Measure of America team has been publishing an incredibly important series of societal sensemaking reports focused on explaining the complex state of well-being in the United States. Their deep expertise has become internationally recognized by many.

We are delighted to partner and work with Measure of America accross many projects in part because this involves much more than just data visualization. We love all forms of sensemaking that helps to drive constructive changemaking!

“Measure of America provides easy-to-use yet methodologically sound tools for understanding the distribution of well-being and opportunity in America and stimulating fact-based dialogue about issues we all care about: health, education, and living standards.

The hallmark of this work is the American Human Development Index, an alternative to GDP and other money metrics that tells the story of how ordinary Americans are faring and empowers communities with a tool to track progress over time. The Index is comprised of health, education, and income indicators and allows for well-being rankings of the 50 states, 436 congressional districts, county groups within states, women and men, and racial and ethnic groups.

Through national and state reports, thematic briefs, and interactive websites such as DATA2GO.NYC, Measure of America aims to breathe life into numbers, using data to create compelling narratives that foster greater understanding of our shared challenges and greater support for people-centered policies. The Project was founded in 2006, and became an initiative of the Social Science Research Council (SSRC) in 2008.”

Previous Reports Include:

About Human Development:

“Human development is defined as the process of enlarging people’s freedoms and opportunities and improving their well-being. Human development is about the real freedom ordinary people have to decide who to be, what to do, and how to live.”

“Measure of America has been supported by many institutions through a combination of grants and commissioned work that all focus on our core objective: to better illustrate and address disparities in well-being and opportunity within the United States.”

Philanthropy Metrics Workshop

IMG_9436

Bringing together leaders from the world’s largest companies driving societal investment strategies, the annual Committee Encouraging Corporate Philanthropy (CECP) Summit is underway here in New York City.

Humantific was invited to design and this afternoon will deliver a hands-on interactive session leading Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) leaders through a series of activities focused on resourcing and accelerating corporate responsibility in their organizations.  Today Corporate Social Responsibility leadership often requires a reporting style that is concise and shows return on investment.

Lead by Humantific’s Elizabeth Pastor and Amanda Greenough the session helps participants rapidly make sense of CECP’s industry-leading guidance for scorecards and better understand the role that data driven insight metrics can play in helping to gain traction specifically with senior leaders and CEO’s.

How do you find your vital few metrics that show visible value?

Exploring this question is the focus of this interactive Humantific workshop session.

Another OTHER Design Thinking

AnotherOther_PG26

Here at Humantific we are always delighted to see design education community change initiatives inspired by The OTHER Design Thinking 2013-2014, Occupy Reimagining Design 2011 and the body of work within NextDesign Futures 2002-2014. Are you ready to be surprised?

Yes that’s right, there is Another OTHER Design Thinking out there, just announced!

Last week the academically focused PhD Design discussion list, well known in the transformation practice community for being slow to adapt, least effective, and often unfortunately down-right nasty when it comes to the subject of design futures made what was for that group, a big leap forward. A few of its loudest, self-appointed leaders announced in a 3 page manifesto posted inside their debating group and across social media that they were finally ready to recognize a multiple part change wave occurring beyond the confines of their circle.Continue Reading..

Data Visualization as Innovation Fuel

Screen Shot 2014-04-29 at 3.05.01 PM

Contributing recently to the Markets for Good blog, Humantific CoFounder GK VanPatter wrote Data Visualization Meets CoCreation.

In this brief paper GK suggests to the philathropic community, taking advantage of what leading business organizations have already learned: that innovation involves equal amounts of challenge framing, idea-making and decision-making. Improving decision-making is not in itself, a formula for enabling cross-disciplinary innovation.

GK suggests moving beyond just data visualization and decision-making to utilize sense-making visualizations as fuel for cocreated innovation. In the organizations that Humantific works with sense-making visualizations are already playing key roles in every phase of the change-making process from the early fuzzy situation stages through to ideation and implementation.Continue Reading..

Data Visualization Meets Co-Creation

Screen Shot 2014-03-05 at 6.08.56 PM

The good folks at Markets for Good / A Social Sector Powered by Information recently invited Humantific to contribute to their exploratory conversation on the subject of Data Visualization in the social sector.

You can read the full unedited version of GK VanPatter’s contribution including references to deciphering your organizational challenges in this downloadable PDF: Data Visualization Meets CoCreation or read the short version on the Markets for Good blog.

“Time is flying by around the Big Data phenomenon so let’s shift gears and kick it up a few notches from what your readers might be expecting here… Big Data is occurring, not in isolation, but rather in parallel to numerous other paradigm shifts …Lets set aside the tactics of Big Data for a moment and consider the bigger strategic picture…What these new generation leaders have in mind looks more like data thinking meets complex problem visualization, data meets and informs strategic cocreation.” GK VanPatter

Humantific Survey / Social Sector Challenge Mapping

From the 10 challenges listed in the attached document choose 3 challenges that are most important to your organization right now and place them in chronological order of importance (with most important at the top). Feel free to post them on the Markets for Good blog or below. If you have another challenge not listed, feel free to add it to your list.  We will share the results.
