Building on the success of The Measure of America the Humantific team is collaborating with authors Sarah Burd-Sharps, Kristen Lewis, Eduardo Borges Martins and Oxfam America to create a new specialized Human Development Report focused on Mississippi. The report series has been conceived as a growing, adaptable Visual SenseMaking platform that inspires, informs and drives social change in the United States. As in the original report the broad purpose of this book is to spur non-partisan conversation, based on apples-to-apples data presented in an easily understood engaging way that departs from all other Human Development reports.
The origninal report that was published by Columbia University Press in July 2008 was immediately referenced by many international news organizations and on hundreds of blogs around the world.
Jeffrey Sachs, Director of the Earth Institute at Columbia University and Special Advisor to Secretary General of United Nations referred to The Measure of America this way:
“The pulse of America on dimensions that count…a sobering read that shows that [American] rhetoric has become ever more unrealistic in the last 25 years…. What this report shows is that the United States of America is falling further and further behind in the world compared to other countries, putting to lie the myths that we hear that you can’t do this, you can’t do that, you can’t afford health for all, for example, when all the other high-income countries do it…. we can actually “measure” where we are and that’s disconcerting and also help to find a way forward. “
In the marketplace we continue to see rising awareness that Social SenseMaking plays a key role in Social Transformation.
